BYD: The integration of battery and body is the future of the electric vehicle industry

At the end of July, the new member of BYD's marine series, the seal, was officially released. The appearance of the highly restored concept car Ocean-X is very technological. It is sold from 200,000 yuan, and its appearance is not inferior to the 300,000-400,000 yuan car. However, compared with the appearance of the seal, the experienced drivers obviously care more about its interior, that is, BYD's e-platform 3.0 and CTB battery-body integration technology specially designed for pure electric vehicles. Photo source: Filmed by Lei Technology On September 1, BYD held an e-platform 3.0 sharing salon in Guangzhou International Financial Center, and discussed with us the seal car, e-platform 3.0, and related principles and uses of CTB technology.

BYD's pursuit is more stable, faster and safer

BYD's pursuit of cars is no different from other car companies. Faster speed, higher efficiency, greater stability, and a safer driving environment. From entering the electric vehicle industry in 2003, to the release of e-platform 1.0 in 2010, and to the release of e-platform 3.0 in 2021, BYD has been practicing its philosophy with practical actions. There are more and more electric vehicle companies and more and more products, which are already eroding the fuel vehicle market. However, car companies do not dare to take it lightly, because in the past few years when the electric vehicle industry has been on the rise, car companies are often rushed to the hot search due to various accidents. Tesla CEO Elon Musk once satirized some media that the accident rate of fuel vehicles is much higher than that of electric vehicles, but the media is staring at the reports of electric vehicle accidents. This kind of remark is correct, but not entirely correct. As a new thing, netizens pay more attention to electric vehicles. The focus of the work of car companies should be on how to improve safety, rather than arguing with the media. In the face of electric vehicles with frequent accidents, BYD has earlier launched lithium iron phosphate battery technology and blade battery design to ensure safety, while the energy density is not too low. Photo source: The advantage of BYD's official lithium iron phosphate battery is that its stability is high enough, and the peak heat resistance can reach 350 ℃ ~ 500 ℃. Even if it encounters a violent collision, it usually does not burn. At the sharing meeting, BYD even stated that the lithium iron phosphate battery can pass the acupuncture experiment. Lithium iron phosphate batteries also have a disadvantage, that is, the energy density is too low, so BYD invented the blade battery design to improve the energy density. However, the battery of electric vehicles is still too fragile, and car companies usually add multiple protection measures to the battery. BYD's CTB technology is to solve the problem of battery safety. CTB is "Cell To Body", which should be translated as "battery body integration", which integrates the battery with the chassis of the car. The blade battery used in CTB technology is inspired by the structure of the honeycomb where the bees live. The biggest feature of the hexagonal honeycomb is that it can disperse the force from all sides. Even the honeycomb made of ordinary materials can withstand a lot of force. Photo source: Lei Technology’s production of this structure is very common in aerospace fields such as aircraft and rockets. BYD applies it to cars, so that batteries are no longer a baby that needs to be cared for, but become a component that supports the car. When a car is hit, the cellular battery disperses and transmits the force it takes. In BYD's test, the battery that has been rolled by a 50-ton heavy truck can still be used normally, and there are almost no traces on the surface. After using CTB technology, the overall torsional rigidity of BYD SEAL is increased by 70%, which is not inferior to a million-dollar luxury car, and it can also absorb shock and reduce noise. As the top two new energy vehicle company in global sales and the largest domestic sales volume, BYD is indeed leading the industry, but in the face of the shining CTB battery body integration technology, Xiaolei still has some doubts.

Will the integration of battery and body be the future of car companies?

There are two main ways to charge electric vehicles, one is charging, and the other is battery replacement. At the sharing meeting, some media raised some questions about charging. The charging power of electric vehicles is getting faster and faster, but the upgrading speed of charging stations cannot keep up. It often happens that the car cannot be charged at full power, and except for special time periods, high-speed There will be a large number of idle charging piles in the service area. Can BYD shorten the charging time through dual-gun charging, or upgrade the power of the charging piles. BYD said that only when the electric vehicle market is large enough, car companies will be willing to invest in a unified standard and upgrade the power of charging piles. As for the double charging questioned by the media, the Denza D9 pure electric version of BYD's high-end brand Denza has been used, and it can be charged with two charging guns at the same time, even if the charging station where it is located does not support the high power and fast speed of Denza D9 charging, the charging speed will be faster. Photo source: Denza’s official website charging must be the main solution for electric vehicles to supplement energy, but some car companies believe that battery swapping is equally important. You can drive away immediately, no need to wait for the car to finish charging, and it takes less time. Many car companies such as Weilai and BAIC are vigorously promoting the battery swap model. Although Wang Chuanfu once bluntly said that "battery swapping is nonsense", BYD has indeed exposed some actions to enter the power swap. However, integration and power exchange are in conflict with each other. The battery is integrated into the chassis, which makes disassembly more troublesome, and the disassembly of the chassis cannot bear the weight, and the things on the car may have to be moved back and forth. BYD's CTB technology is currently only used in the seal car, but when the technology is more mature and the cost is reduced, the CTB technology will most likely be distributed to other models. If CTB technology is fully popularized, it is almost equivalent to BYD giving up the battery swap mode. In fact, not only BYD, but also car companies such as Tesla and Leapmotor are also developing integrated technologies this year, but the names are different. The integration and power exchange models have come to the opposite side. In this tit-for-tat competition, BYD, Tesla, Leapmotor, etc. have stood aside, while Weilai, BAIC, etc. have stood aside. Photo source: pixabay As for those car companies that have not yet stood in line, Xiaolei believes that there will be more car companies that choose integration. The reason is that integration is not as good as battery replacement mode in solving battery life anxiety, but the cost is much lower. If you want to promote the power exchange mode, it is necessary to build a large-scale power exchange station, which requires a very large cost. However, electric vehicles are still in their infancy, and the market is not mature enough. Many new car manufacturers rely on financing to survive, and the risk of building swap stations is too high. Xiaopeng Motors CEO He Xiaopeng once said that there will only be 5 to 10 leading car companies in the future, and other car companies will either survive in the cracks or be acquired by other car companies. As a leader among the new forces in domestic car manufacturing, the CEO of Xiaopeng Motors must have his reasons for saying this, and it is enough to see the intensity of competition among car companies. In the face of this situation, most new energy car companies may not dare to do the battery swap mode. The integrated model of BYD CTB and leading CTC is the mainstream choice for future car companies. In addition, BYD confirmed earlier that it will provide its own DM-i hybrid technology to Skyworth. BYD is a car company and an auto ecosystem provider. Both lithium iron phosphate batteries and hybrid technology can be provided to friends. In the future, CTB technology may also be provided to friends. Friends can save a lot of research and development funds. At the same time, BYD can also have more sources of capital income. Perhaps in the near future, we will be able to buy a non-BYD electric car fully loaded with BYD technology at a lower price. Cover image source: BYD
