IDC: Worldwide PC and tablet shipments to decline further in 2022 and 2023

IT House September 2 news, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Devices latest forecast report, the PC and tablet market is about to usher in a period of turmoil. IDC expects worldwide traditional PC shipments to decline 12.8% to 305.3 million units in 2022, while tablet shipments will drop 6.8% to 156.8 million units. Inflation, a weak global economy, and a surge in purchases over the past two years are the main reasons for the decline in shipments over the next two years. IDC noted that further contraction is expected in 2023 as consumer demand slows, coupled with deteriorating macroeconomic conditions and crowding out demand for education, as education needs are largely met. The combined market for PCs and tablets is expected to decline by 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024. "While demand is slowing, the outlook for shipments remains above pre-pandemic levels," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "As economic headwinds accelerate, we expect consumer sentiment The deterioration will lead to further contraction in the consumer market over the next six quarters," added Linn Huang, vice president of research for devices and displays. "A timely economic recovery ahead of the next major refresh cycle could drive some of the growth in our forecast for the outside years. It will peak at the time of the epidemic, but we expect the consumer market to move towards the higher end of the market.”
