Microsoft Windows 11 Dev Preview 25188 Released

IT House August 25 news, today Microsoft released the Windows 11 Preview Build 25188 update to the Dev development channel. Microsoft is experimenting with a new touch keyboard setup with this release, and Windows Terminal is now the default terminal. This release includes a nice set of fixes to improve the overall experience for Windows Insiders. Microsoft has also released an additional Microsoft Store advertising update. IT House has learned that new known issues include that applications that rely on .NET Framework 3.5 may be broken. If users have installed applications that use the .NET Framework 3.5 and need them to work, they may need to pause the version and defer updating to this version.

New

Updated touch keyboard settings Microsoft is experimenting with a new touch keyboard setting that replaces "When keyboard is not connected" under "Settings > Time & Language > Typing > Touch Keyboard" with a new drop-down menu Show touch keyboard" checkbox with 3 options to control whether clicking on the edit control should start the touch keyboard:
  • Never disabled when no hardware keyboard is attached Touch the keyboard.
  • The touch keyboard will only appear "when keyboard is not connected" when the device is used as a tablet without a hardware keyboard.
  • Always show the touch keyboard even when a hardware keyboard is connected.
[Currently this feature is only available to some beta testers, as Microsoft plans to monitor feedback before pushing it to all users. ]

Changes and Improvements

[Windows Terminal]
  • Windows Terminal is now the default terminal in Windows 11. This means that all command line applications will automatically open in Windows Terminal (for example, Command Prompt and PowerShell). This changed setting can be found at Settings > Privacy & Security > For developers. Note that this feature requires Windows Terminal 1.15 or higher.

  • Updated the Wi-Fi and Virtual Private Network properties page in Settings to now include a link to the advanced properties of that network.

Fixes

[taskbar]
  • Fixes related to the reliability of explorer.exe Taskbar overflow related issues.
[Start]
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Start suggestion to show only one column instead of two.
  • Fixed an issue where Narrator would incorrectly pronounce the search box twice in Start.
  • Fixed an issue where the access keys (underlined letters) in WIN + X had duplicate definitions when updating pending reboot.
[File Explorer]
  • Fix that caused a small number of preview members to be in the last few Dev Channel releases Repeatedly experiencing explorer.exe crashes after trying to access certain folders on their system.
  • Fixed an issue where some unreadable text/UI could end up showing the wrong color if File Explorer was opened while switching between light and dark modes.
  • Fixed an issue that caused explorer.exe to crash when opening a folder containing certain images.
  • The up arrow in File Explorer is no longer misplaced.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the Desktop, Pictures or Documents folders from being unpinned from Quick Access.
  • Fixed an underlying explorer.exe crash that could occur when File Explorer startup aborted, e.g. if trying to access a network share from the Run dialog, prompting for credentials and clicking Cancel " instead of typing them.
  • If a tab title is too long to fit in the available space, hovering over it will now show a tooltip with the full name.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause explorer.exe to crash when closing File Explorer.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the delete key to sometimes not work on files in File Explorer.
  • With the introduction of tabs in File Explorer, removed some toolbars that users accidentally saw (using View/Edit etc.). As part of this, the "Always show menu" option in the folder options was also removed, which did nothing.
[Search]
  • Fixed a potential crash that could prevent search from starting.
  • Searching for "detect monitors" will now return display settings.
[enter]
  • Multiple updates to emoji keywords based on feedback, including Searching for apple in Polish (respective languages) does not show the red apple emoji, searching for trash or garbage in English now shows the trash emoji, searching for roger in English now shows the salute face emoji, searching for bug now shows the scoop Bug emoji.
[Settings]
  • Fixed an issue where the printer could not be removed in settings in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue where DNS suffix search list entries were not displayed correctly in Settings.
  • Fixed an issue where the button in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps to change the current view could unexpectedly display an arrow overlaid on top.
[Task Manager]
  • Updated the positioning of the view button tooltip position to no longer block the title bar Close button.
  • When using dark mode, the arrows displayed when sorting by CPU process are no longer black on a black background in some cases.
  • Updated the selection highlight color when selecting a row on the Details or Services page to be less bright and consistent with other colors used in the updated Task Manager design more consistent.
[Other]
  • Fixed an issue that caused missing/corrupted characters on the Bitlocker screen when using the Japanese display language.
  • Fixed an issue where the advanced settings of the application pool on the remote IIS server would display a blank screen.
  • Fixed an issue where the step recorder would not close when pressing ALT + F4.

Known Issues

[General]
  • Some games that use Easy Anti-Cheat may Can crash or cause the PC to bugcheck.
  • Microsoft is investigating reports that audio stopped working for some users after upgrading to the most recent version.
  • Microsoft is investigating reports that several different applications have started crashing in recent versions.
  • [NEW] Enabling .NET Framework 3.5 from the Windows Features dialog does not work in this release. It may be disabled if the user enables it before upgrading. This can cause problems for applications that depend on these components. Microsoft is fixing it.
[File Explorer]
  • Microsoft is addressing an issue where the background of the search box in File Explorer may be the opposite color of the current mode .
  • Microsoft is fixing an issue that prevents the taskbar from showing if File Explorer is maximized and the taskbar is set to auto-hide. .
  • [NEW] File Explorer when launched from certain locations seems to open and close before finally finishing dragging. A fix will be available in a future release.
[Widget]
  • Notification badge numbers may appear misaligned on the taskbar.
  • In some cases, notification banners for certain badges did not appear on the widget panel.
[print]
  • Microsoft is addressing an issue in recent Dev Channel releases that caused rows to not be included when printing tables from certain applications.
