Intel Technology Tour: 80Gbps Thunderbolt 4 Version 2.0 Demonstration, VPU Unit Accelerates AI Computing

Intel is holding a series of events called Technology Journeys at its research and development center in Haifa, Israel. The event was the first time Intel showed off a Thunderbolt test system connected at 80Gbps. Thunderbolt 3 initially offered 40Gbps connection speeds and later became part of the USB4 specification. The current Thunderbolt 4 has not further improved the connection speed. In the picture, we can see that 80Gbps is combined through two 40Gbps Thunderbolt channels, and the bandwidth is twice that of the existing Thunderbolt 4. Intel hasn't said whether the new Thunderbolt port will be called Thunderbolt 4 version 2.0 or Thunderbolt 5, but we have reason to believe it will be part of the future USB4 version 2.0 specification. In addition to the next-generation 80Gbps Thunderbolt interface, Intel also revealed that the VPU unit will soon be installed in the 13th-generation Core mobile version for the first time, and the 14th-generation Core will fully integrate the VPU into the SoC part. Intel quotes Microsoft as saying that the VPU Neural Processing Unit represents an inflection point in computing that will be the key to a new and enjoyable experience for Windows users in PCs. In addition to the VPU, Intel also introduced new technologies such as the new Intel Connectivity Performance Suite 2.0, WiFi proximity sensing, Bluetooth LE audio, and WiFi7. LE Audio will replace SBC with the new LC3 codec, providing better audio quality and longer battery life. WiFi7 can provide users with a wireless network connection speed of up to 5.1Gbps.
