AMD details 6nm 7020 series APUs, RDNA3 to launch on November 3rd

6nm AMD 7020 APU: At Computex this year, AMD announced the Mendocino APU for everyday basic laptops. AMD revealed more details today. According to the new processor naming rules, Mendocino belongs to the Ryzen/Athlon 7020 series, is based on the mature ZEN2 architecture, and is manufactured using an updated 6nm process. The AMD 7020 series will include three models, the Ryzen 5 7520U, the Ryzen 3 7320U, and the Athlon Gold 7220U. The first laptops using these chips will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. The AMD 7020 series has a maximum of 4 cores and 8 threads, a maximum acceleration frequency of 4.3GHz, and supports LPDDR5 memory and BGA SSD (NVMe protocol). The Ryzen 3 7320U has 4 cores and 8 threads, the base frequency is 2.4GHz, and the acceleration frequency is 4.1GHz. In AMD's internal tests, the Ryzen 3 7320U with 4GB of memory and 1TB SSD was faster than the Intel Core i3-1115G4 with 8GB of memory and 256GB SSD: 31% increase in PCMark 10 productivity, 58% increase in CineBench R23 multithreaded test, 7-ZIP increased by 80%. In addition, in the PCMark 10 application loading test, the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U model with BGA SSD was 31% faster than the other. This test used to be Intel's traditional advantage project and had a direct impact on user experience. AMD's lead should have something to do with its use of BGA SSDs (usually DRAMLess-type NVMe SSDs). AMD expects laptops with 7020 series processors to have up to 12 hours of battery life, and the integrated Radeon 610M graphics card uses RDNA2 technology and supports AV1 decoding to help improve battery life for video playback. The ZEN2 core is paired with the RDNA2 GPU. The same formula has also appeared in the AMD custom APU used by the Steam Dock. The difference is that the Mendocino core display CU has fewer CUs and is mainly for daily basic applications. Of course, AMD also mentioned that it can run online games such as League of Legends and DOTA2 at a frame rate of more than 60FPS at 720P resolution. In addition, AMD today also confirmed that the new RDNA3 GPU will be released on November 3. The Radeon RX 7000 is expected to be close to 4GHz and get even further gains in performance per watt and efficiency.
